Fashion's dark side

Unlike most actresses who get fixed into loveliness, Natalie Portman gets to explore a role of darkness where raw talent awaits. This vegan Harvard grad is a beauty by nature, and is in the process of tearing through the aura of flawlessness that she holds so well.

In Darren Aronofsky’s brutal ballet tale Black Swan, she plays Nina, a young ballerina whose virginal existence is tainted and transformed into that of a powerful maenad. The film takes place in a ballet company where dancers desperately seek the approval of a callous choreographer. When he casts her to star as the white and black swan in Swan Lake, she breaks herself into completely madness to then be reborn artistically. Portman’s performance can only be described as truly magnificent; she carries you through the brutal reality of a ballerina’s struggles to the top.

We Fein girls are very excited to see Natalie express her dark side, but even more excited to see the 40 + costumes designed by Rodarte. This marks Laura and Kate Mulleavy’s first venture into costume design for film; the designers share an obsession for film, especially the horror genre.

Darren Aronofsky said he wanted to use contemporary designers “to reinvent the whole sense of ‘Swan Lake’.” The Mulleavy’s explained the creative journey as “tapping into the psychology of the film…understanding the darker nature and more of the twisted kind of underbelly of that world.” The designers explained how style took precedence over function and that producing fashion-forward ballet costumes proved to be a challenge.

If you’re a Fein girl who enjoys fashion, suspense and horror, then check out Black Swan in a theatre near you. See link below to watch an interview with Natalie Portman on Black Swan.
