You’re Not "Buggin" Us!

After reading one of our favorite blog sites today (of which shall remain anonymous), we discovered the rather apparent disdain for, well, insects especially when transformed into accessories. Typically associated with words such as, gross, disgusting, yucky and ugly, who would have ever thought bugs could actually be quite chic? Although this particular blog post was completely turned off by the idea of creepy, crawly, jewelry, we have to respectfully disagree. You see, the insect statement pieces remind us of the late Elsa Schiaparelli (LOVE HER!!XOXO). She was one of the first fashion designers that took the ordinary and made them extraordinary. In the 1930's Elsa began collaborating with Salvador Dali , who was an artist , and began using oddities to add pizazz to the traditional silhouettes. For instance, the shocking, delicate Insect Necklace pictured below, from afar could appear to be a bejeweled, colorful collar piece.

" The Insect Necklace"

Tres chic, no? Now to find the beauty in modern day oddities, such as the Sea of Shoes bloggers, who have collaborated to conjure up their own nature inspired collection. Though the Fein girls aren’t fans of the living insect, the militant bronze finish and chunky chains used on these charming creations had us at hello. Channel Ancient Egypt and adorn yourself with a bronzed beetle. As you know, Egyptians believed the beetle held mystical powers and was a symbol for luck. Man were they ahead of the curve by a few thousand years?! But don't worry , no beetles were harmed in the making of these fun pieces.

Our favorite attention grabbing piece would have to be The Beetle Belt by Sea of Shoes. The beetle belt is cast of solid bronze, hand finished, and weighs just a little over a pound. He measures 9 inches long and 3 .5 inches wide. Now that's what we call art!

We do realize there will always be ideas that, to be frank, should never have come to fruition. Those ideas that are better left unsaid and definitely should NOT be created. Here are some horrifying bug inspired creations that should have been swatted away from the drawing board and leave our skin crawling.

No other commentary is needed…

Elements of nature will always be present in the design world, and beauty can be found in just about any aspect. So give it a whirl and throw on a beetle, spider or butterfly, and by butterfly we DO NOT mean to put little bouncing clips back in your hair (thank you 1994). You may be surprised with the influx of compliments and nods to your quirky style.

Someone great once said " A woman who buys an expensive dress and changes it , often with disastrous result, is extravagant and foolish" - Elsa Schiaparelli
