Red Carpet Glamour

The Fein Girls were glued to our television sets last night to see what the stars would be floating down the Emmy's Red Carpet in. There was an abundance of red, dusty lavender, black, one shoulder Grecian styles and ruffles. And after much deliberation, we have come to a consensus on the Top 10 Best and Worst dressed of the evening.
We thought we would start with the Worst Dressed, to get them over quickly, almost like ripping a band aid off, you know?

1. Actor Ty Burrell of "Modern Family" wearing an ill fitting grey tuxedo paired with horrendous tan shoes, that take on a clown shoe effect. To make matters worse, he is pictured here with his wife who looks more like a pinata, without the delicious candy. The Washington Post mentioned that she looked like a "just married" getaway car. Now that's funny!

2. Let us preface by saying we are ashamed to even critique a reality "star's" wardrobe choice, but it was too awful not to. Kate Gosselin really went for the whole mom look with this super boring black halter dress with sequin cowl. We are getting a very strong chaperon at the prom vibe from this choice.

3. And Miss Universe 2010 goes to....Oh wait, that already happened. Then why the heck would you pick a pageant dress to wear to the Emmy's? We don't know, but Sofia Vergara from "Modern Family" must. This sweetheart neck mixed with sequins in an odd cream color, screams "where's my tiara?!" All she needed was a nice sash with her home country on it.

4. Nurse Jackie was in need of an outfit doctor last night, big time. Edie Falco, looked dumpy and dull in her one shoulder black gown. The fit and cut of the dress were all wrong for her athletic build. Congrats on the win though!

5. We felt anything but "Glee"for Jane Lynch's ensemble. Although the plum color and one shoulder cut was rather nice on her, the bottom half of the dress is what made us crinkle our noses. Did she jump out of a plane to make it to the red carpet on time? Thank goodness for that parachute the designer added as a skirt then!

6. Ugh, this one pains us to write about given that we LOVE "Mad Men" and the ultra beautiful January Jones...but we are almost speechless for this choice of dress. The gown is a gorgeous Versace, but didn't translate so well off the catwalk. Not to mention the styling of the undone hair and boring black pumps. Her stylist should have gone for drama with this look instead of tousled and messy with a couture garment. We can't believe someone got paid the big bucks to put this look together for her.

7. Jewel. Oh poor little Jewel. Baby doll dress gone bad. The lace, the up do, the huge earrings, and not to mention the satin bow, there was too much going on here and made her look more like Pam Anderson, to be honest.

8. Another star who took their look waaaaay too far, Heid Klum. She is just as cute as a button and has always been a stand out on the red carpet for us, until now. The hair, makeup, jewelry, dress and shoes are all too overdone. Does she not realize with a body like that, less is more??

9. We thought we totally missed that Xena Warrior Princess had been brought back from the dead when we saw Anna Paquin from "True Blood". Again, another runway look that does not work for a short actress. The cut of the dress even adds the illusion that she has a tummy, eek!

10. Didn't realize there were swamp lands at the main entrance, poor Toni Collette from "The United States of Tara" must have been wrangled out of the muddy water! Her gown starts out with a nice pewter color, then fades into a grass stained mess.

Now that the hard part is over, we turn your attention to the more elegant looks of the evening.

1. Sorry for the reality "star" nod AGAIN, but this beautiful white Marchesa gown made us forget why Kim Kardashian became famous. She was styled so flawlessly and seem to glide down the red carpet. We are definitely keeping up with were this Kardashian is going.

2. A controversial pick, yes, but we are suckers for a good red head in a pale shade of lavender. Christina Hendricks looks divine in this delicate Zac Posen number. Dainty Ostrich feather accents top the gown off nicely too. She looks angelic!

3. Oscar de la Renta can seriously do no wrong! The man is a genius, just take a look at Lea Michele from "Glee". She is mounted atop a swirl of navy taffeta ruffles and wearing exquisite jewels to boot.

4. Monique L'huillier made an appearance in the form of an elegant ruby confection worn by Kyra Sedgwick from "The Closer". The delicately pleated dress, paired with the dusty rose clutch, bangles and wavy hair, and strong lip, all worked together in a great way. She looked effortless.

5. Wow, wow, wow! Claire Danes was a winner in more way's than one last night. She was absolutely radiant in her Armani Prive dusty pink sequin gown. The simple silhouette complimented by earrings and hair styled to perfection, reminded us of old Hollywood glamour.

6. Normally making our Worst Dressed list, or being completely forgotten, Tina Fey knocked our socks off this time. She chose a gorgeous Oscar de la Renta silk satin gown with beaded overlay that fit her like a glove and was unlike anything else on the carpet. Kudos to Tina for hopping aboard the Oscar train!

7. How gorg did Jenna Fischer from "The Office" look?! Complete 180 from her character Pam Beasly, Jenna chose a vintage Versace gown in Salmon and a lightly tousled and curled quaff. Divine!

8. Elisabeth Moss went for ultra glam as well with this beautifully draped Donna Karen gown. Again, another great red head in a pale shade and she looks stunning!

9. Lavender was a big hit for the evening and Emily Blunt wore the trend well. Delicate flowers were scattered across the lavender Christian Dior frock, which complimented her dark hair and milky complexion perfectly.

10. Brooke Burke looked ravishing in her white Mark Zunino gown with peek-a-boo slit up to her thigh. Her hair cascading down one shoulder and just the right amount of accessories, gave her a timeless quality. Absolute perfection.

Well, there you have it, our recap of Emmy night style. We would love to know what you think too! Give us a shout using the ever so handy "comment" box below and tell us your thoughts.

The Weekend That Was

Hello lovelies! I hope you're all having a splendid Monday morning. Right now I'd much prefer to be in some far-off forest cabin with a fire going, a snuggly blanket, creamy hot chocolate and a good book. And the lovely drummer to keep me company of course.

Alas. It is monday and work beckons. At least I've got last weekend, this weekend I...

+ Met up with Cocoa for a lovely dinner at the Cape Quarter
+ Watch the craziness of Magic Of Pegasus in shock/strange revere
+ Got to bed at 6am on Sat morning
+ Went to Cape Farmhouse in Scarborough with the lovely drummer
+ Watched the last nail-biting ten minutes of the SA v. Aus Rugby game
+ Watched High-Stakes poker with the lovely drummer (and fell asleep)
+ Walked 5km for the Blisters for Bread event in Greenpoint on Sunday morning (I was up at 6!)
+ Had a brilliantly, perfectly-timed family braai (I needed some family time)

What was your weekend like lovelies?

Ps, Puffins are one of my ultimate favouritest of birds, what's yours?

Frame of Mind, A Look Back At Iconic Eyewear

Cat Eye Frames:
Sexy Secretary Chic
Worn here by Marylin Monroe on the set of How To Marry A Millionaire below you can see Edward Beiner's version from his 2010 collection.

Some call this the best selling eye wear design of all time. James Dean made these legendary on the set of Rebel Without a Cause in 1954.

Tea Shades:
Popularized by 1960's era rockstars these were put on the map by John Lennon.

Onassis glasses or "Jackie O's"
Just like she did for the Chanel pink skirt suit Jackie O. made these her signature look, there is no doubt these oversized shades helped her with the paparazzi glare.

Aviators:
First created strictly for pilots, these became a must-have after 1986's Top Gun, all the boys wanted to be as cool as Ice-Man...okay maybe Maverick too.

Sticky Business

Cynthia Rowley has brought you fancy threads for years, now she wants to make your boo-boo's fashionable! What do you think readers? Does she get a clean bill of health or do we leave her in for overnight observation?

H&M Camel Tones

Camel tones are HOT on the autumn winter 2010. Beige, camelare are the perfect tones for the new knit items. Honey Yellow is the foundation tone for all the camel coats this autumn. This season, if a head-to-toe camel outfit seems to be too much, mix camel with denim or other autumnal shades, like copper, golden brown, red-brown or mahogany.

I like camel because yes, it’s classic and it’s accessible. It’s not something that looks too cheap when it’s made cheaply, like velvet

A really nice collection and all the leather items are great.

Muizenberg's Labia Museum

Yesterday I spent the entire glorious day in Muizenberg.

It was a gorgeous day, perfect for my out-of-office mission: interview and take photos of the Muizenberg community for subsequent journalistic scribbling (see: furious typing) by me for our the travel blog that I write for.

The lovely drummer joined me midday and we, hand in hand, explored the nooks, streets and surf shops that make up the Muysenberg area. We ate a perfectly vegan meal at Closer and then ascended the steps of the Natale Labia Museum.

Wow.

What a beautiful building! There are a few rooms set up as a museum displaying the most decadent writing desks, ornate vases and luxurious chandeliers, and then there is a perfectly gorgeous dining area where you can have lunch or even a dinner and piano concert (note to lovely drummer boy: i *want*) and then upstairs is my favourite area. It's an art gallery with the most calming open spaces and stunning views.

I felt like royalty as we stood on the top floor balcony, looking out over Muizenberg beach and had to fight the urge to stick my nose in the air, look down on the 'commoners' below and wave very slowly with just a turn of my wrist.

I wish I could have a room like this one in my house one day - so clean and clear of junk and stuff and things - just a room.

Afterwards the lovely drummer and I got a dvd out, I let him choose and regretted it - he loves cheesy, B-Grade Sci-Fi - note to you lovely readers: Do *not*, I repeat, do *not* watch Mutant Chronicles. Ever

Ps Tonight a few friends are having a dinner at the lovely Se's place. We're each supposed to bring some veggie snacks to share. Help! Any Idea?

Also, I'm feeling really happy today so I hope you all have the most wonderful day! Smiles, smiles, smiles

We're Going Mad!

We’re going mad, for Mad Men that is, and it seems as though trends from the popular Mad Men series have jived their way off the small screen and onto this season’s runways. Fall/Winter is all about classic femininity, a la Peggy Olsen or Betty Draper- as we see the 1950’s and 60’s inspired fashion swing its way back into style.

From voluminous tea length skirts with cinched waists, to ultra feminine dresses, that so effortlessly give the illusion of a pin-up hourglass silhouette, think less Audrey Hepburn and more Marilyn Monroe aka REAL woman!

Bias cut skirts draped in heavy wools, were carried over from the floral cottons of the Spring/Summer runways, putting a new twist –and shout on the 1950’s housewife look.

Adapt the look to your own personal style by adding a fitted top to give you an effortless sixties secretary look. The Fein Girls are also loving full skirts paired with a corset or tucked in silk chiffon blouse.

Accessorize with a lady-like purse or slouchy Opera gloves, like the covetable pieces from the Louis Vuitton Fall 2010 campaign and you’re good to go daddy-o!

Sharing Is Caring, It Can Be Fun

Fashion Week's around the world will inevitably have a squeaky wheel or in this case 600, almost every season. By squeaky wheel, we are of course speaking of delightful protesters. Whether it's the annual crazed PETA members, angry plus size models in Aussie, or designers against the Burqa Ban in Paris, it's pretty much guaranteed someone will be rubbed the wrong way by one cause or another. While we can understand the points most organizations are attempting to make, this year's NYFW potential protest is a bit ridiculous to be honest.

It has been reported that a union representing 600 stagehands at Lincoln Center, Local 1 (the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) is a bit peeved that they have not been hired as the production crew for this seasons shows. Although they do have a contract which gives them jurisdiction to produce most of the happenings at the Lincoln Center complex, Damrosch Park is not included. Which, yup you guessed it, is where Fashion Week will take place. So we have to ask, what's the big deal?? Talk about a warm welcome for the Fashion world...Sounds like a few people are tired of the behind the scenes work and are craving their moment in the spotlight. We could empathize if a contract was being broken and the union workers were not being hired on for unjust reasons...but this simply isn't the case at all. IMG, the company producing Fashion Week, is looking to dilute the issue before the kick off on September 9th and stands by the fact that there is no obligation to hire union workers.

We say, c'mon Local 1, share some of your domain with the non-union workers that have been producing successful, cost effective, runway shows for many seasons. Who would have thought stagehands would have been so passionate about Fashion anyway? Why the sudden interest in tainting the first season at Lincoln Center by causing an unnecessary scene? Please quit pouting and let us have our twice a year event in peace. Jeeze. This makes us long to be back at the tents in Bryant Park, where the only mob to combat was of the animal loving kind. It will be interesting to see if an additional 600 people will be rallying outside. Stagehands should know better than anyone that the show must go on!

In any case, this will give us even more reason to bust out our best military ensembles, to head into the battle of evening making it past the hundreds of people to the front entrance. Throw on your chains, army green, brass buttons and boots, we'll see ya there!
