Is Stefano Pilati's Status at Yves Saint Laurent in Jeopardy?

Stefano Pilati's rise at Yves Saint Laurent was a swift one. He came on board to run ready-to-wear in 2000 and in 2002 was promoted to Head of Design for all product lines, including accessories, only to be named Creative Director in 2004.

Things seemed to be going well for Pilati, however, his failure to appear at Monday night's Metropolitan Opera Gala, Yves Saint Laurent's biggest event of the year stateside, has raised a few eyebrows and has the fashion world buzzing. Daily Front Row has reported that rumors were circulating that his absence was due to Yves St. Laurent not being happy with his work at the house.

The site reports that retailers were talking during Paris Fashion Week about how Pilati's YSL accessories sell well, but his ready-to-wear doesn't. When he didn't show at Monday's gala (he's gone the two years prior at Anna Wintour's side), rumors that the label was searching for a new designer reportedly intensified.

In a dinner speech, YSL ceo Valérie Hermann addressed Pilati's absence:
“Finally, Stefano Pilati, YSL’s creative director, has asked me to convey how sorry he is not to be able to join us tonight, and sends his very best wishes from Paris, where he is busy with the coming collection," she said. “Somebody still has to work in this company.”

So, in case anyone was wondering, if you miss a party, you will be sacked. We'll see you at The Boom Boom Room ;)
