Cannes Film Festival Fashion Parade

The 63rd annual Cannes Film Festival kicked off Wednesday night with a grand opening gala and classic Hollywood glamour. The red carpet on the Riviera was awash in big sweeping dresses by the likes of Armani, Gucci, McQueen, Pucci and Marchesa. With fashion houses competing for exposure as much as films, sartorial showstoppers were definitely on display. So let's get down to the dresses because that's what we really care about.

Promoting her new movie Robin Hood, Cate Blanchett was the talk of the red carpet in her Alexander McQueen gown from the Pre-Fall 2010 Collection. The black and silver eagle print dress with white tulle netting had been selected and personally chosen for the actress by the late designer. A fitting and beautiful tribute to Lee Alexander McQueen for sure.

The "World's Most Beautiful Woman" dazzled crowds in her full length lilac dress from Elie Saab Couture. Aishwarya Rai reaffirmed her status on the fashion radar with her elegant mermaid-style number.

Eva Longoria wore a stunning off-the-shoulder white silk gown from Pucci, replete with what seemed to be an endless train of ruffles. The bridal-esque confection certainly added a glamourous touch to the festival proceedings.

Kate Beckinsale donned a voluminous dress with feathery lilac layers from Marchesa for her duties as a festival juror on opening night. The assymetrical creation sparked debate among fashion critics with one observer calling it an outright 'disaster'. Thoughts?
