Nothing more than fashion

IS A STATEMENT, NOT A STYLE. FASHION DOES NOT HAVE TO BE WORN CASUALLY, NOR OUTSIDE THE RUNWAY. FASHION IS FIT FOR ALL SIZES FOR ALL PEOPLE OF ALL AGES. FASHION IS AN ART OF PERSONAL SELF-EXPRESION, NOT AN EXCUSE TO BE PRETTY, POPULAR AND CHARISMATIC.

Trend Alert: Aviator Caps!

I don't know about all of you, but I am one girl that is gaga for aviator frames. A cool classic, with the ability to glam up any outfit, they will--to me at least, forever be in style (we all have our weaknesses).

But other than those spicy frames, I never really explored the other wonders of an aviation wardrobe, which is why I find myself pleasantly surprised by the surfacing trend that is aviator caps.

Now, we urge you all to resist your immediate reaction to reel back with distrust, and breathe. Because, when done right, they are quite cute. And there is true credibility behind them. For the Hermès fall collection, Jean Paul Gaultier accompanied each look with a cap and a pair of goggles, and word on the street is that despite the $840 price tag, they sold out. Same with Alexander Wang, whose leather cap with attached cape did quite well at Opening Ceremony last spring when they had an easy price tag of a cool $1,925.

Of course, if you want to be authentic, you can always go for the real deal and purchase either the handmade sherpa-lined cap at U.S. Wings, or the unlined version, dubbed "Snoopy" for $33.95

Valentino....eh?

So, critics have not been lavishing an incredible amount of glory of Valentino's Spring 2010 collection.

The word has been: "cool" but alas, "trying too hard". And while we guess we see their point, it has to be pointed out that Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli have the monumental task of revamping the entire label, while at the same time respecting the brand's heritage.
No easy feat- and after Alessandra Fachinetti's very sudden dismissal from the label, can you blame them for wanting to play it a little bit safe?

We think this collection is certainly a step in the right direction, and we are even on board with the whole, Garden of Eden-thing, but is it just us, or does the hair and make-up just not seem to entirely go with the clothes?

Maybe it's just us, maybe we've gone a little loony this afternoon due to excess diet cokes and sugar-free gum chewing, but something minor seems off.

What about you guys? Do you love it? Hate it? Do you think we're horribly, horribly wrong? Or injustifiably right?

Let us know!

In a Word: Spectacular

What do you get when you combine Mexico, Aztecs and Avatar? Why, the Jean Paul Gaultier Couture Spring 2010 Collection, obviously!

Set to mariachi music, the show began with denim and dark suits, but shortly thereafter erupted into a couture color sensation.
“I saw the Avatar and, like everyone, found it extraordinary. And from there I began thinking of nature and ecology, and the Latin American tropics; and from there it was not very far to Mexico,” explained Gaultier, this morning.

News Alert: No LBDs at Chanel!

Is silver the new black? Are dresses making way for shorts? Could the Tin Man be the next style icon?!?Such are the questions that are flowing through our minds as we contemplate Karl Lagerfeld's vision of the future that was sent down the runway today for Chanel's Spring 2010 Couture Collection. The LBD was not the only tradition that was absent, classic braiding was replaced with silver lining, suits were redesigned, A-line skirts were replaced by tulle-trimmed shorts, and there was not one chain to be seen.

It was Chanel 2.0 and there to take you on this space oddity was Karl himself, with an army fingerless-gloved models by his side, (and one gold-suited Baptiste Giabiconi, to escort the final look...hence: Tin Man)

Lagerfeld dubbed the collection “neon-baroque”- we find it very Madame Bovary meets Brave New World, and we like this world; especially since there was not a single clog in sight!

Before Gaga, There was Galliano.

The theme was equestrian as Christian Dior's spring 2010 couture show walked this afternoon in Paris. And we were relieved. Last year John Galliano sent a plethora of scantily-clad, willowy models down the runway in not much more than bras, and slips, (occasionally pairing a bra or a slip with a ballgown skirt), and while the craftsmanship was just as superb as Galliano's legendary showmanship, it's nice to return to an era where lingerie is no longer considered outerwear.

Today, the models sported riding crops and side-saddle skirts and already critics are heaping heavy amounts of praise--but they tend to on the regular with Galliano.

From a personal standpoint?

We Fein Girls are rather fond of the collection- particularly the cocktail dress worn by Chanel Iman- but the ballgowns were quite pretty as well. It is reported that front-row celebs Dita Von Teese and Kylie Minogue breathed gasps of admiration upon viewing the ornate creations which were large enough to hide a refugee or two.

Overall? We dig it.

And while I have your attention, I feel it necessary to comment on Galliano's deliverance of the "Man-sete": my own play on words to describe the male corsets he sent down the runway in his fall 2010 men's collection.

What do you guys think of the man-sete?
Let us know, and stay tuned because we are bringing you all the news from Paris.
Until tomorrow lovelies,

Fashion on the Floor in Spring '10

Alexander McQueen Spring’10
Hey Girl Hey!
Yay, it's Friday and we are so excited ... not so much that the work week is over but PARIS FASHION WEEK STARTS SUNDAY!

But let's not get ahead of ourselves the Spring '10 campaign ads are swirling around are pretty little heads and we have noticed a theme. All the model are laying down on the floor! Don't get us wrong they look stunning but we just don't understand why some of the biggest names in the industry are copying each other. They did not use the same photographer, model or even backround. (We cannot wrap our heads around it)

xoxo,
The Fein Girls

Want it: Sweaters by Jim Drain

Word to the wise: people come and go, relationships may fade, but a well-made sweater lasts forever.

And the latest item to make our little Fein-girl hearts go thump thump are exactly that, made by the talented Jim Drain.

A RISD-grad and 2005 winner of the Baloise Art Prize, has a true knack for knitwear. Drain began using his pal's sewing machine in 1998 upon graduation, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Drain has cited the meditative repetitiveness what he finds most enjoyable in knitting. As well as its end results: hard messages couched in softness; which is the perfect description of his latest items.

After a collaboration with Green Naftali, three Jim Drain sweaters are now being sold exclusively by Opening Ceremony (check the NYC window display) at their New York, Tokyo and L.A. Stores.

Design is limited (1o of each) so if you are having a little SJP "I had to have it" moment going on, hurry up and skidaddle your way on over to www.openingceremony.us

We have to have it!!

Winds from Africa

Western fascination with African design has come and gone in various gusts for the better part of a century. Picasso and Kandinsky were into tribal motifs, as now is Jean Paul Gaultier and singer, M.I.A.

Take a peek at how designers and artists have made a habit of drawing on African-influences throughout the years.

Masculinity Reigns at Gucci...We Approve!

Call me what you like; a stereotype-er, a non-believer, a girl with a cold heart of stone--(that last one is true by the way)--but I had quite the surprise when I sat down at watched what Gucci had to offer the world of menswear this year in Milan.
For the 2010 winter collection, Frida Gianni took the house back to roots and what followed was an impressive display of classic cool. While other Italian houses are still making bold statements, Gianni seems to be taking the more nostalgic route and reinventing the past with camel-colored coats, impeccable tailoring and of course, loafers.

The flash was minimal but the splash was big. For too long the major houses have been trying, trying, trying in vain to invent something big and exciting in the world of men's fashion. Those attempts at new and fresh were in fact, tiresome and dull. They seemed to forget that at the base of it all, a man is a man. They underestimated the power of a good suit.

What Gianni sent down the runway was electrifyingly great simply because of its simplicity.
The collection's innovation was born out of the house's timeless pieces, and menswear has been returned to it's rightful owner...men!
Can we put away the fur dresses now?

Emma Watson imaginea colectiei Burberry primavara/vara 2010

Emma Watson interpreta personajului Hermione Granger din filmul Harry Potter, este imaginea colecţiei Burberry primăvară-vară 2010. Aceasta apare in noile reclame alaturi de fratele sau, Alex Watson si inca 3 tineri britanici, faimosi in industria modei si a muzicii.

You're Joking...Right?

As news of the latest attempt to save a once undeniably chic fashion house, with yet another celebrity, comes flooding onto our computer screens, the Fein girls are left to beg the question you're joking...right?

Why must when times get tough we grab the nearest Blackberry and take the first celebrity we can get to "save" some of our most coveted labels. Ok, ok a little harsh yes but there are so many untapped design talents giving everything short of a limb in hopes their creations will be adored by all. Some designers spend a lifetime trying to be seen and heard only to be passed up by an actress, socialite or even worse, reality star of the moment. The only similarity between celebrity and creativity is that they both start with a C.

As you can see the Fein girl crew passionatly believes you should stick to what you know. We have yet to see a heavy hitting fashion designer snagging the lead role in the latest blockbuster. Have you? No you haven't and probably won't because that would be insulting to suddenly step in and claim to be an actor.

Now you must know who we are talking about at this point (no it's not Lindsay Lohan, that isn't even worth writing about...a picture is worth a thousand words) but in case you haven't heard, Sarah Jessica Parker aka SJP has assumed a creative role at Halston. We know most of you are gasping right now that we would even question this decision. She has such great style... oh wait that was in the hit TV series turned movie, Sex and The City. Wake up people the clothing was selected for her (rather well too, props to Pat!). We think the fashion world should dig a little deeper and surprise us all with a fresh face, preferably one with a fashion education, to resurrect our old favorites. We are all so hesitant to break the mold, try something new, but it just may be what we all need. But seriously, could you imagine if Karl Lagerfeld put Chanel in the hands of, oh lets say Heidi Montag? Yeah it pains us to think such a thought too. But luckily she has had enough plastic surgery that she can't feel a thing.

The point of this rant is quite simple. We should all stick to what we know. Save the creative roles for those with passion and gee I don't know...TALENT. Making a best dressed list a time or two doesn't constitute years of experience or make you a designer.

We could go on for days, but we will spare you and now step down from our soap box to leave you with those final thoughts. We ask that the fashion world opens their eyes to all of the possibilities that may be right in front of them.

Helping Haiti

On Tuesday at 4:53 p.m. an earthquake measuring a 7.0 magnitude hit just 10 miles west of Porte-au-Prince and its 2 million inhabitants. An International Red Cross spokesman announced that up to 3 million people may have been affected by the major quake which included 33 aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.2 to 5.9.

The U.S. Geological Survey have called it the strongest earthquake since 1770 in what is now Haiti, and President Barack Obama today has pledged $100 million for Haiti quake relief. The question now on many people's minds has been: How can I help?

As of now, most organizations are asking for monetary donations. So the Fein Girls have complied a list of a few organizations that are currently helping those in need. All of these organizations are highly regarded and well-esteemed. The Fein Team urges everyone to help with what they can and to keep in mind that being charitable is always in fashion.

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross' primary focus during the initial response of an emergency is feeding, sheltering and supplying any other basic needs. The humanitarian organization delivers medical care to people caught in crisis. Donations to its Haiti relief efforts will go toward repairing the obstetrics and trauma hospitals in Haiti that were damaged in the earthquake. They also will go to transporting an additional 70 doctors and medical supplies to the island in an effort to set up makeshift emergency medical response centers. To donate, go to doctorswithoutborders.org or call 1-888-392-0392.

Mercy Corps
